Preserving resident ownership

Why South Shore
owners are organizing

A building’s financial and physical condition affects every household that owns a home there. When costs rise or repairs fall behind, residents can face difficult decisions with lasting consequences.

Preserving condominium and cooperative housing helps South Shore residents remain in their homes, protect their investment, and pass wealth to the next generation.

Common building concerns

  • Special assessments and rising operating costs
  • Deferred maintenance and major repair needs
  • Building violations and fines
  • Financial instability and limited reserves
  • Problems with board leadership, communication, and decision-making
  • Receivership and the possible loss of owner control

Connecting across buildings gives residents a way to identify common problems and organize for solutions together.

The proposed mutual association

What buildings could
accomplish together

NNA is supporting the development of a Condominium & Cooperative Mutual Association so South Shore buildings can work together on needs that are difficult to address alone.

The proposed association would connect buildings around shared resources, cost concerns, and preservation priorities. Each building would retain its own board and decision-making authority. Residents would help shape the association’s priorities and structure.

Shared resources

Useful information, professional contacts, and experience from other buildings facing similar concerns.

Collective purchasing

Opportunities to seek group pricing for common building needs and reduce operating costs.

Technical assistance

Connections to legal, engineering, financial, and other assistance suited to condominium and cooperative buildings.

Education and leadership

Learning opportunities for owners and boards, with support for stronger building leadership.

Stronger advocacy

A collective voice for preservation resources and policies that address residents’ concerns.

Ownership preservation

Earlier attention to building problems and coordinated efforts to protect resident ownership.

The association is in development. These are goals for the organizing work, with services and purchasing arrangements to be developed as resources become available.

Participation starts with you

How you can
get involved

Condominium owners, cooperative shareholders, board members, landlords, and renters are welcome to participate. You do not need to be a board member to get involved.

You can attend organizing meetings, help connect neighbors in your building, volunteer your skills, or take part in developing the proposed mutual association. Your building’s concerns will help guide the work.

NNA’s organizing role

NNA brings residents together, coordinates resource connections, and supports building leadership. Residents help identify priorities and organize the action needed to address them.

Our work in South Shore

An initiative rooted
in residents’ concerns

This initiative grew from NNA’s work with South Shore condominium and cooperative owners through housing outreach, resident conversations, and neighborhood research.

Owners described recurring problems with repair costs, building finances, leadership, and the risk of losing control of their buildings. Those concerns continue to guide NNA’s organizing work and the development of the proposed mutual association.
